A visit by a nutritionist to Vision AfriKa’s crèche earlier this month gave both adults and children an insight into the importance of healthy eating.
The aim of the visit was to try and address the challenge of childhood obesity, which ironically can go hand-in-hand with malnutrition but also often leads to diabetes and illness.
Martha Mayembane, who works at the Kayamandi Clinic and does outreach work with local schools, spoke to a group of 60 children, their teachers, three volunteers, the principal and cook.
She warned about the dangers of over-eating and advised everyone to have smaller portions for lunch and to eat less during breaks. Mayembane also spelled out the importance of eating healthily and what it entailed, before involving the children in a question and answer session to ensure they had understood.
On leaving, she also left posters to stick on the walls to ensure that everyone remembered her message.
